Sonya Kurzweil, Ph.D., Director, Psychotherapist

Dr. Kurzweil is a long-time practicing psychologist with a private practice in Newton, MA.  She specializes in working with women, children, parents and families.  She received her clinical training at Boston Children’s Hospital, the Human Relations Service in Wellesley, MA, and at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.  She is a graduate of the Child/Adolescent Advanced Training program from The Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.  She received her Ph.D. and research training at Tufts University.  Dr. Kurzweil has worked at both Boston Children’s Hospital and the Massachusetts General Hospital. She founded Sonya Kurzweil Developmental Center (SKDC) in 1995.

Dr. Kurzweil’s publications include research articles in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, Infant Behavior and Development, International Journal of Group Psychotherapy, International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, and the American Journal of Psychotherapy where she serves as a reviewer.   She has co-authored a book of poetry for children with her daughter and together they founded (2004-2012) and directed Project Poetry & Pictures, an international outreach program for disadvantaged children to promote literacy, arts, and creative expression. Dr. Kurzweil serves on the President’s Council of Boston Children’s Museum  (since 2014) and on the advisory board of First Gen Ahead (since 2019), a nonprofit organization that fosters the careers of first-generation college graduates.  Her charitable activities also include sponsoring the Sonya Kurzweil Grant Program at William James College which awards grants to students concentrating on child-family clinical psychology, based on the strength of their doctoral projects and commitment to the child-family specialty. 

Dr. Kurzweil lives in Newton MA with her husband.  They have two grown children and three grandchildren.
